GRAS was originally established in Edinburgh in 1972 by Nicholas Groves-Raines and Kristin Hannesdottir. Over more than 50 years, the studio has been engaged in conserving, restoring and adapting some of Scotland’s most significant listed buildings. Nicholas Groves-Raines was awarded an RIAS lifetime achievement award in 2017 for service to Scotland’s built heritage, and an MBE for services to Architecture, Heritage and Conservation in 2022.

A key part of our practice is working with charitable trusts and community groups; imaginatively repurposing and rehabilitating redundant churches, estate buildings, former industrial heritage sites and steadings to form vibrant and sustainable community hubs, museums and galleries, commercial and retail spaces, and new housing. We have a long track-record of working on grant-aided projects, and our work is always bespoke and centred around an understanding of our social and ecological responsibilities.

Our award-winning team collaborates with our clients and contractors to ensure that we deliver excellence at every stage of the design and development process. We bring our comprehensive experience to each project, whether that is the design of a piece of furniture or large-scale urban planning, and our work stretches from the Shetland Islands to Cornwall, and from Northern Ireland to Scotland’s east coast.

Today, GRAS benefits from a diverse team with a deep understanding of historic buildings, including design architects, conservation accredited professionals, building surveyors, technologists, archaeologists, interior and graphic designers and even a product design engineer. We embrace new technologies, while always referring to the past for inspiration and understanding.
