Our Experience
“Enhancing lives by designing great places”
Our team at Smith Scott Mullan Associates is focused on the design and realisation of high quality architecture. We take a professional, people-centred, collaborative approach to each project, putting clients and communities at the heart of everything we do.
Our practice was established in 1995 and is now 24 strong. We have completed over 500 projects, including urban regeneration, historic building conservation and civic buildings, often supported by our in-house expertise in community consultation. Current and recent projects include:
• Stranraer Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme for Dumfries and Galloway Council – Conservation and refurbishment of four key buildings in the town centre, part-funded by Historic Environment Scotland, including the adaptation of a 1930s clock tower to a community facility.
• Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh – Conservation works to the A-listed Victorian Palm Houses, refurbishment of B-listed Lecture Theatre, conservation and adaptation of the B-listed East Lodge to café and visitor facilities.
• National Museum of Flight for National Museums Scotland – A five-year programme of meticulous conservation of five buildings erected during the Second World War and now a Scheduled Monument.
One of our Directors, Jamie Bateman, is a Conservation Architect accredited by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), a prerequisite of many sources of funding for conservation projects. Jamie has many years’ experience of bringing new life to old buildings and a particular interest in sensitive contemporary interventions to facilitate new uses. Privately, he is a trustee of Tweedsmuir Community Company, an HTN member.
