Our Experience

“Enhancing lives by designing great places”

Established in 1995, Smith Scott Mullan is a multi-award-winning Edinburgh-based architectural practice. We believe that great design enhances lives, and we design with people in mind – creating places for people to thrive now and into the future. We have a reputation for technical excellence and a commitment to quality service, which ensure we build trusted relationships and deliver successful projects.

We provide a full range of architectural services from inception to completion and beyond. Working collaboratively with clients and partners alike, we draw on our years of experience across multiple sectors to ensure quality design and successful delivery. Our tried and tested processes ensure that even the most complex and challenging of projects is expertly handled.

We take a holistic approach to conservation architecture. It is a complex sector in need of specialist resource; requiring sensitivity and a consistently thoughtful approach to ensure the past successfully marries the future. We know this is where our clients value our expertise, experience and training the most; they can trust us to give them creative and considered solutions.

One of our Directors, Jamie Bateman, is a Conservation Architect accredited by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), a prerequisite of many sources of funding for conservation projects. Jamie has many years’ experience of bringing new life to old buildings and a particular interest in sensitive contemporary interventions to facilitate new uses. Privately, he is a trustee of Tweedsmuir Community Company, a Heritage Network member.
